How can someone even think so deeply ... :?.. too moved...Spend some time in getting the meaning if you are not every comfortable with Urdu like me.. It conveys a lot. One of the initial writing by Ghalib, with Takalus as "ASAD".. not very famus like many others, not sure if any singer has even covered this. But I personally found it very good encountered it just few days back...

[vahashat=solitude; shoharat=fame]

qataa kiije na ta'alluq ham se
kuchh nahii.n hai to adaavat hii sahii

[qataa=to break; ta'alluq=relation; adaavat=animosity]

[majalis=assembly; Khalvat=isolation]

[ koocha = a narrow street/lane, gumgashta = missing ]

dasht ko dekh ke ghar yaad aaya

[ dasht = desert ]

[ sang = stone ]

This GHazal is often confused with another GHazal written by Ameer Minai, because

they happen to be hamradeef GHazals (i.e. the shers have the same ending words for the

second line) here I am posting the Ghalib's version.

meharbaaN ho ke bulaa lo mujhe chaaho jis waqt

maiN gayaa waqt nahiN hooN ke phir aa bhi na sakooN

zauf meiN taanaaeaGHyaar ka shikwaa kyaa hai?

baat kuchh sar to nahiN hai ke uThaa bhi na sakooN

[ zauf = weakness, taana = taunt, aGHayaar = enemy,

shikawa = complaint ]

hathkanDe = tactics, charKH = sky, neelee_faam = blue colour/
complexion ]

KHat likhenge garche matlab kuchch na ho
ham to aashiq haiN tumhaare naam ke

raat pee zamzam pe mai aur subh_dam
dhoye dhab'be jaame' eharaam ke

[ zamzam = a well in Kaba whose water is considered holy,
mai = wine, subh_dam = at dawn, 'eharaam = dress for 'haj' ]

dil ko aaNkhoN ne fasaaya kya magar
ye bhee halqe haiN tumhaare daam ke

[ halqa = ring/circle, daam = net/trap ]

shaah ke haiN GHuslesehat ko KHabar
dekhiye kab din fireiN hammaam ke

[ GHusl = bath, sehat = health, hammaam = a hot bath where a masseur
gives massage and bath ]

ishq ne 'GHalib' nikamma kar diya
warna ham bhee aadmee the; kaam ke

When ever I feel low, I go back to my diary of Mirza Ghalib's collection, and Mullah Asad always helps me, if not in changing my mood but atleast in thinking deep about it....

[ pairaahan = shirt/robe/cloth, haajat = need/necessity,
rafoo = mending/darning ]


jalaa hai jicm jahaaN dil bhee jal gaya hoga
kuredate ho jo ab raakh, justjoo kya hai ?

[ justjoo = desire ]


ragoN meiN dauDte firne ke ham naheeN qaayal
jab aaNkh hee se na Tapka to fir lahoo kya hai ?


woh cheez jiske liye hamko ho bahisht azeez
siwaay baadaegul_faam-e-mushkaboo kya hai ?


[ bahisht (or bihisht, both are correct) = heaven, baada = wine,
gul_faam = delicate and fragrant like flowers, mushkaboo = like
the smell of musk ]


piyooN sharaab agar KHum bhee dekh looN do chaar
yeh sheesha-o-qadah-o-kooza-o-suboo kya hai ?

[ KHum = wine barrel, qadah = goblet, kooza/suboo = wine pitcher ]


rahee na taaqat-e-guftaar,aur agar ho bhee
to kis ummeed pe kahiye ke aarzoo kya hai ?

[ guftaar = speech/discourse ]

huaa hai shaah ka musaahib, fire hai itaraata
wagarna shehar meiN 'GHalib' kee aabroo kya hai ?

[ musaahib = comrade/associate ]
